The Fold Care Farm

Helping people to grow

Spring is in full flow, bringing tree blossom, wild flowers and seedlings flourishing in the greenhouse. This has created the ideal time to reopen our Care Farm provision at The Fold.

The Care Farm reopened at the end of March and runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. At The Fold Care Farm we offer meaningful land-based activities for people with a range of backgrounds and support needs, including those with learning difficulties, individuals with mental health issues, those living with dementia and people who are excluded or disengaged.

We work with Care Farm participants on all aspects of organic food production from compost making, seed sowing and propagation to transplanting, weeding and harvesting. We also enjoy creating crafts from natural materials such as willow and wood, cooking and preserving farm produce, as well as going on nature walks to spot local wildlife. The Fold farm offers a green, calm and peaceful place to be, where everyone can feel welcome and be supported to learn new skills and meet new people. The Care Farm runs all year round; we have plenty of warm, covered spaces to take shelter from the cold and wet weather when needed, and enjoy cooking and crafts that celebrate the seasonal changes. Participants are able to come either independently or with a support worker/carer if needed. We offer accredited AQA qualifications for those who would like to work towards these, which we are able to tailor to the learners' needs.

We have space for more participants who would like to come to The Fold Care Farm, as well as more volunteers to help support our provision. We offer free taster sessions to give people the opportunity to find out if it is a place they would enjoy. Anyone interested in coming to the Care Farm either as a participant or a volunteer can contact our Care Farm manager, Kate Broad, on carefarm@thefold.org.uk or call 01886 833 633. We are looking for donations of waterproof coats and trousers, warm jumpers, wellington boots and sun hats. You can also find out more about the Care Farm on our website which has a link to the National Care Farming Initiative’s website.

With our awareness of mental health issues rising, Care Farming, also talked about as ‘green care’ or ‘nature-based interventions,’ is becoming more widely known and has a growing body of evidence that supports the benefits it provides. The 2016 report commissioned by Natural England on Good Practice in Social Prescribing for Mental Health: The Role of Nature Based Interventions, finds that:

"Nature based interventions provide multiple outcomes simultaneously and can help to increase mental health and well-being, increase physical activity levels, decrease social isolation, provide opportunities for learning and positive behaviour change and reconnect patients to other people – all this takes place in the natural environment, which in itself is known to provide additional health benefits."

We would love to get more people involved with The Fold Care Farm – please help us by spreading the word to anyone you know who may be interested or may benefit from the provisions.
