Handmade in Hallow
Now almost five years old, Handmade in Hallow is a friendly local crafting group that meets regularly in the village. Stella Reeve, who is one of its founder members, tells us more.
We think that our logo ‘Handmade in Hallow’ gives a bit of a clue about what we do and where we do it, but some people have asked to know a bit more about how we started and what our plans are, so here goes!
In late 2014, a small group of ladies started to meet in Hallow Scout Hut, with the aim of making hand crafted gifts and decorations to sell at the Hallow Church Christmas Fair. Handmade in Hallow was born and we look forward to celebrating our 5th anniversary in September.
We have grown to 30 members, all ladies at the moment but gentlemen are always welcome too. We meet monthly from January to June and in September, October and November. Meetings at Hallow Scout Hut begin at 10.45am with refreshments, ready to start at 11am and finishing at 12.30pm. There is a £10 subscription for nine meetings in the year.
We have a planned programme, including speakers and demonstrators from outside the group as well as group members who share their own expertise. Dates for the coming year are 12th April, 17th May, 21st June, 20th September, 18th October, 15th November. We are also planning an outing one day in the summer.
In the past we have had a go at many different crafts including paper crafts, book folding, beading, felting, flower arranging, knitted prayer squares and shawls and numerous items for Christmas decorations. We also include one or two social mornings for a ‘knit ‘n natter’.
We like to support local charities by making items we can give away. For example, last year we made many ‘fidget’ cuffs and blankets for dementia patients in local nursing homes. This year we hope to support the Footsteps charity who work with bereaved children and their families in Worcestershire. Come and hear more about that at our meeting in April.
The group is very much part of the Hallow community and we are keen to take part in village events. We were especially pleased to be busy making poppies for the Remembrance Day commemoration in church.
We enjoy holding sales in the pre-Christmas period and this year promises to be our busiest yet, with events at Park Heath, The Firs nursing home, Hallow church Christmas Fair, the Hallow Community Group seniors tea and more tbc! The money raised from these sales ensures that we can remain as an autonomous and self-funding group.
You are very welcome to come and join us – we are an informal and friendly group. No experience necessary!
